The FBR Open in Scottsdale was cold and wet until Thursday.

The golfers showed they liked the Valley’s cold streak of weather, which kept the rough short. The rain softened the greens. Birdies were more abundant than Gambel’s quail in the spring. That’s fine, because this tournament never pretended to be the U.S. Open, where par can be a winning score. Lots of birdies mean lots of happy fans.
